Assisting migrants — through safe channels of migration, protecting undocumented populations, the right to work, etc. — is key to preventing trafficking. Yet, far too often a lack of understanding causes human trafficking and smuggling to be wrongly conflated, leading to policies that end up leaving migrants vulnerable.
